Orthorexia
You might be wondering, what is ‘orthorexia’…..
Orthorexia is a condition that occurs when a person becomes obsessed with ‘healthy’ or proper eating.
Being aware of the nutritional content of food is not an issue BUT when a person fixates on ‘healthy eating,’ they can sometimes take these behaviors to an extreme and then it can become limiting or take over their thoughts and eating behaviors.
Some common ways orthorexia shows up include:
- compulsive reading of nutrition labels or ingredient lists
- habitual tracking food and exercise
- cutting out specific foods or food groups
- labeling food as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ or ‘not for me’
- an unusually heightened interest in the health of what others are eating
- exhibiting high levels of stress when ‘safe’ or ‘healthy’ food options are not available
- obsessively following and viewing of food or ‘healthy lifestyle’ content on social media
- thinking you don’t want to ‘waste calories’ on certain foods
Does it scare you to think about letting go of these perceived ‘healthy behaviors’ or ‘healthy food choices’ even though they feel never ending, continuously morphing and overbearing?
